Andreas Wissmann | PhD

John is an industry veteran and entrepreneur who has been working as a mechanical design engineer and project leader specializing in new product development, mechanical system simulation, design, and deployment since 2000. He previously founded Tangent Design Engineering. John has strong experience managing technical teams and designing equipment for medical applications, aircraft ground support, oilfield, compression, downhole tools, and consumer products. John holds a Masters of Applied Science in Engineering (Biomedical) from the University of British Columbia, and a B.Sc. with Distinction in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba.
Andreas has been a start-up tech entrepreneur for the last 20 years and co-founded and/or played leading roles in a number of Calgary-based companies in the biotech, lab instrumentation and health IT sectors. While he’s a recovering PhD scientist (Microbiology & Biochemistry) he now mostly works at the interface of business executive and science/technical responsibilities. Andreas is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Calgary.

Jacquie Neve | PhD, Patent Agent

Jacquie is an intellectual property specialist who understands the need to support sound IP decision-making in the business context of commercializing new technologies. She has enjoyed various roles along the IP pathway for over 20 years, as a university and industry research scientist, patent agent, and in-house IP manager/director at start-ups and SMEs. Throughout her career she has also maintained a keen interest in IP education, teaching IP courses at the University of Calgary as a guest speaker and as a sessional instructor. While patents are her core expertise, her depth and breadth of experience spans all areas of IP and within a variety of disciplines, including biotechnology, software and engineering. Jacquie has the proven ability to develop forward-thinking holistic solutions aligning IP development and protection with business goals to make best use of resources, mitigate legal risks, and maximize intangible asset value.

Some clients (such as busy medical doctors) may want to have a fairly hands off approach and do not want to be involved in a full-fledged commercial operation. Such scenarios could include licensing (royalties) or even selling the developed technology to an entity that is already established on the market. Other clients may be looking towards becoming startup entrepreneurs themselves. We can help with all of these scenarios and in the case of aspiring startup entrepreneurs even provide mentorship through the whole process.

One scenario we see as an ideal way for us to leverage our comprehensive capabilities is to work with experts (doctors and other health care professionals) who have identified a key problem they would like to solve in their specific field. Maybe the expert has already started to think about a solution to that problem and in some cases may have even begun to develop a prototype.
